2025-04-22 7:00 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

On April 22nd, Hispanotech’s president, Citlalli Rios, and our president emeritus, Carlos Paz-Soldan were present at KPMG Toronto, where more than 170 people gathered to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the proclamation of Spanish Language Day, in an event filled with emotion and deep meaning. This 2025 becomes a year of great importance and celebration for the Spanish-speaking community in Canada, a year that marks a before and after in the recognition of Spanish as a living, present and growing language throughout the country. This development is not only a reflection of the growth of community and unity, but also of a country increasingly committed to its rich cultural and linguistic diversity.

Mayor Olivia Chow delivered an emotional address to the community, emphasizing the value of linguistic diversity and the significant contribution of the Hispanic community to the city's cultural development. The speeches of Chief Transformation Officer (CTO) of the Toronto Police Service Colin Stairs and Carlos Ruiz González, the second head of the Embassy of Spain, were also key moments of the event, which underlined the fundamental role of Spanish in the construction of a more inclusive and multicultural society. There also was an outstanding theatrical performance by the Mississauga Players, who paid tribute to the various writers of Latin America and Spain. This event not only celebrated art and literature but also the crucial role of Spanish as a cultural vehicle that unites diverse nations. In addition to the cultural part, attendees were able to enjoy a tasting of traditional dishes that offered a glimpse into the gastronomic diversity of Spanish-speaking countries, a sensory experience that enriched the celebration. The evening also provided an excellent opportunity for networking, where members of the Hispanic community, diplomats, and business owners had the chance to strengthen ties and explore new opportunities for collaboration, reaffirming that Spanish remains a key language for relations between Canada and Spanish-speaking countries.

This 2025, Canada celebrates not only a language, but also the stories, cultures and traditions that accompany Spanish on its journey through this vast country. Through proclamations and celebrations in different cities, Canada's commitment to multilingualism and multiculturalism is reaffirmed, as Spanish continues to strengthen ties between Canada and Spanish-speaking nations. From all corners of the world, Spanish is consolidated as a living language in Canada, a symbol of unity and diversity that, year after year, continues to grow and be celebrated with pride.
